Nikon Action Extreme 12x50 ATB Binoculars are a great choice for long range viewing when you need extra magnification. Features include world-renowned Nikon Eco-Glass optics, anti-reflection coatings, and an All Terrain waterproof, fogproof and rubber-coated body. These high powered binoculars are easy to mount on a tripod with the addition of a binocular tripod adapter.
Worry-free waterproof and fogproof housing
The Nikon 12x50 Action Extreme Binoculars have an ATB designation, which is an acronym for "All Terrain Binocular". In a nutshell, this means your Action Extreme binoculars can go just about anywhere, and perform flawlessly under a wide variety of weather conditions. The Action Extreme's ergonomic body, with its durable and protective rubber-armored coating, is Nitrogen-purged to remove all traces of moisture from its interior, and then the binoculars are o-ring sealed to prevent moisture re-entry.
Nikon Action Extreme Binoculars are guaranteed to protect the optical system against damage if they are submerged or dropped in water to a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 5 minutes. This means you are safe if you get caught out in the rain or snow, or accidentally spill coffee or a beer all over your binoculars; and even if they are submerged for a short time in a puddle or stream, you should be okay. If you plan to use these binoculars on or near the water, the addition of a floating strap might be a good idea; it would help them from sinking deep enough to cause damage as long as you rescue them within the 5 minute timeline.
Nikon optics for bright, sharp images
The high quality Eco-Glass lens elements of all Nikon Action Extreme binoculars are finished with multi-layered anti-reflective coatings to deliver optimum brightness, high contrast, true color rendition and flare-free viewing in most lighting conditions. BaK-4 high index prisms, made with Barium Crown glass, are also part of the Action Extreme design, for sharp images with less light loss than most BK-7 prisms.
Adjustable eyecups and easy central focus
The Nikon 12x50 Action Extreme Binoculars feature unique click-stop, twist out eyecups that offer good eye relief and the ability to vary that eye relief so the user can find the perfect eyecup location for their needs. There's also a diopter control to correct for normal right/left eye vision imbalance.
Focusing is a piece of cake, too. The oversized, ribbed focus knob is ergonomically placed right in the center of the binocular bridge so that your hands will find it instinctively. Sensitive to the slightest adjustments in either direction, you'll be able to find perfect focus in a snap. Close focus for the 12x50 Nikon Action Extreme model is 23 feet.
When you will be using your high powered binoculars for any length of time, you will enjoy the option of mounting them to a photographic tripod with a binocular tripod adapter (sold separately). Mounting your high magnification Action Extreme binoculars to a tripod will eliminate arm fatigue and image shake, and its a nice way to go if you will be sharing your views with others. A beauty cap marked with the Nikon logo can easily be removed to reveal a tripod adapter port, and will accept a 1/4-20 threaded bolt from a standard tripod adapter.

Q1: I am deciding between two pairs. This pair and a Bushnell 12x50 waterproof, fogproof Porro. Could you give me some advice please?
A: The Bushnell Legends do have a slightly better optical quality than the Nikon Action Ex binoculars. But the Nikon's have a better warranty. So my advice is to ask yourself what kind of use will you be putting the binocular through. If the type of use will most likely be dangerous to the binocular then go with the Nikon if it is some all around use where it is unlikely that the binocular would be destroyed and the optical quality is important then go with the Bushnell.
Q2: Is the model good for Astronomy also, which is better 16X50 or 12X50? I want both hunting and limited astronomy capability.
A: This would be an excellent model for your uses. i suggest sticking with a 12x50 as it will be more stable of an image which of course for astronomy will be an advantage.
Q3: what does one gain by stepping up to the monarch series (12x56 monarchs vs this 12x50 Action EX)?
A: Both Nikon 12x50 Action Extreme ATB and 12x56 Monarch ATB are very nice binoculars. Each series was at or near the top of its class in 2005 birding binocular judging by the Cornell University Ornithology Lab. The Monarch offers fully multi-coated optics, which means every air-to-glass surface has received multiple chemical coatings to increase light transmission and eliminate scatter. The Action has multi-coated optics, which indicates that at lease one surface has received more than one coating. The Monarch, with its 56mm objective lenses, offers more than a full point more in \Twilight Factor\" than does the Action. Twilight Factor is 25.9 for the Monarch vs. 24.5 for the Action. The Monarch also is more compact. Though it's 0.8 inches longer than the Action at 7.8 inches, it's also a full 2 inches narrower at 5.7 inches. That makes it easier to carry or pack. In sum, the Monarchs will give brighter, crisper images than the Actions, especially under low-light conditions, and the Monarchs are also easier to pack and carry."
